Margaret Young was the fifth child in a family of 8 children. She had two sisters and five brothers. her brother Alex came to Canada. Margaret came to Canada in 1891. She was a passanger on the Dominion Line S.S. Sarnia leaving from Liverpool on July 10, 1891 bound for Quebec and Montreal. The ship arrived in Montreal on July 20, 1891. Margaret Young, spinster, destination Morden, Manitoba, was in a party of 14 young women accompanied by a Mrs. Joyce who disembarked at Montreal and went to accommodations at 84 osborne Street before setting out for Manitoba. The ships manifest shows 86 passengers, 38 cabin and 48 steerage. Eight days later she arrived in Winnipeg. She was met in Winnipeg by James Dudgeon and they were married on July 28th, 1891 at Thornhill by Rev. G.W. Wilson. Their witnesses were Robert Laing and Lizzie (Elizabeth) Dudgeon. At that time the farm was described as being in the Township of Shadeland in the County of Manitou. The marriage license was registered in Manitou.

Margaret and James lived in the original homestead along with James’ parents, Andrew and Margaret. In this home 6 of the 7 children were born. The youngest daughter Mary was born in the new house. As the old 2 storey log homestead was bery small it must have required much respect, patients and consideration for the ten people to co-exist. What a treat it must have been to move into the new 30 x 30 2-storey new home, complete with running water and hardwood floors. On the main floor their was a washroom, pantry, large kitchen/dining room, parlor, Granny’s room, and and central hallway. The second floor had five bedrooms and a bathroom. There was a front porch complete with a balcony on the second floor. The full basement was accessible from the main floor.

Before coming to Canada Margaret worked as a nursemaid in Scotland. There is a picture of Margaret with two of her charges taken in approximatley 1886 when she was 18 years old. The boy in the picture went on to become a doctor. In 1886 Margaret was presented with a “Card of Merit” for 3 years of faithfull service in the employment of Mrs. Robert Gibb of Boon, Lauder. The document was signed by the Countess of Aberdeen, M. Aberdeen, president of the Friendly Society. the Countess of Aberdeen was the founder of the Victorian Order of Nurses. Margaret was well suited to the task of taking care of others and often accompanied the doctor whe new babies arrived or she ended persons who were terminally ill. She had been described as a lady who would warm a new born on her knee infront of a fire while busily knitting woolen mittens. She certainly was a great knitter, and during the war years, her hands churned out socks, mittens, gloves, helmets, vests etc. She had long black hair pulled neatly into a bun and at her death in 1943 at age 75 she only had a few gray hairs.

When leaving the farm in 1933 Margaret lived with her daughters Margaret and Mary in Morden. In 1934 Mary married Robert Denholm and she lived with them until her death in 1943.

Margaret was a life long member of the presbyterian Church, a member of the local Red Cross and she was a faithful untiring worker fo both.

Margaret died in August 1943 at the home of her daughter Mary. The funeral service was held at Knox Presbyterian Church in Morden with the service being conducted by Rev. Dillwin Evans of Norwood, Winnipeg, assisted by student minister Gordon Cunningham. Interment was at Knightcote Cemetery, Thornhill, Man. Pallbearers were her sons, Andrew, Peter, Alex, and Robert, son-in-laws, Wesley Scales and Lorne Livingston.

Eldest son of James and Margaret Dudgeon. Was an original member of the 18th Mounted Rifles, serving two and a half years with the Royal Canadian Dargoons in France, returning to the farm at Shadeland in 1918. The family moved to section 6-2-8 south of Manitou in 1934 farming until 1948. He worked at carpentry until 1953 when he joined the Corps of Commissionaires and worked at Rivers Base until his retirement. Andrew was a hard working man “Jack of all Trades” and mater of most. He was fond of horses, enjoyed curling, and baseball. Respected by all in farm community south of Manitou. Served on the school board and everyone you and old came to him for advice and help for which he never accepted any repayment, only “maybe someday I’ll need some help” and a handshake. “A great human being!”

Funeral service was held at the Morden United Church on April 6 with Rev. D. Archibald and C. riddell officiating. Interment in the family plot at Knightcot Cemetery, Thornhill, Manitoba.

Peter Dudgeon second son of James and Margaret Dudgeon was a veteran of World War I, having gone overseas with the 184th Battalion and here was transferred to the 27th Battalion. Following his return to Canada, he married Fanny Johnston on November 24, 1920 and they settled on N.W. 12-2-7 in the Pearce District.

Pete had a special skill with animals and was often called upon to help his neighbours with sick animals and especially during the epidemic of encephalomyelitis, when the stricken horses required around _-the-clock care.

Pee was a breeder of registered Ayrshire cattle and following his death in 1962, the Ayrshire Association established a “Mother and Daughter” trophy in memory of him. Since Brandon no longer features a cattle show at the fair, the trophy is now presented at the Virden fair.

As mentioned Peter did serve in World War I and his records can be found online.

Alexander Henry Dudgeon was the third son of James and Margaret Dudgeon.

Alex and Celia were married in 1929 at Celia’s parents place (known to our generation as the “Beer” farm place). It was celebrated with a barn dance being held in the loft of the big new barn.

Alex and Celia settled down to farming on N.E. 6-2-6 where Eileen, Ole, Allan, Arthur and Dale were born. Living only one mile east of the corner that sheltered Pearce Church and School, their life centered in the Pearce Community. But the roots they put down in “the corner” had been embedded previous to their marriage. Alex helped operate one of the tractors that moved the church to “the corner” in 1921. In the Aspevig home, Celia had prepared meals for the gang that built the school on the corner of her father’s farm.

Their interest caried. Alex has been an elder of Pearch Church and served on its Board of Stewards. Alex served as trusee and secretary-treasurer on the Pearce Schoolboard and is one of the original members of the Thornhill Pool Elevator and Thornhill Co-Op Store.

Recreational activities are several. Alex has been a keen hunter. To listen to the hunting tales, it would appear that Pembina trails must lead inevitably to Pike’s Peak. He posesses the patients demanded of a fisherman. His enthusiasm for curling means that his, “Yes! Sweep hard! Bring it along!” has echoes through a straw-walled rink near the Dead Horse Creek, the Lindal rink, and Morden’s arena, where he curled as a member of the Farmer’s club.

Alex and Celia moved to Morden in 1964.

Obituary:

Suddenly, on Wednesday December 20, 2000 at the Morden Hospital, Arthur Dudgeon, age 70 years, of the Morden District, went to his eternal rest.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Lorraine (nee Rothernburger); two daughters Jodene and Roy Towes of East Selkirk and sons Kevin, Adam; Dawnalee and Ray Dudgeon-Christie of Winnipeg and children Cameron, Taylor; one sister Eileen Laing of Morden, two brothers Allan and Marion Dudgeon of Morden, DAle and Phyllis Dudgeon of Darlingford and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Cecelia Dudgeon and brother Ole LeRoy Dudgeon.
Viewing will be Friday, December 22, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Wiebe Funeral Chapel, Morden, (1050 Thornhill St.). Cremation will take place. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 23, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Church, Morden (353 Thornhill St.) with Rev. Jim Penhale officiating. Ash interment will follow a the Chapel Cemetery, Morden at a later date.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, Man. R3B 2H8.
He will be sorely missed on those fishing trips up the Winnipeg River and those polka parties will never be the same without him there, doing his fancy steps. For those who truely knew Art there will be a lot of bright and happy memories we will have to remember him by. Love you!

Fondly known to his family and friends as “Uncle Bob”. Bob remained a bachelor- he farmed a quarter section of land adjacent to Pearce School and St. Andrews Church. Uncle Bob was a quiet and shy man, he enjoyed baseball and curling and if there was a game in the area he was sure to be there. He also liked to drive through the countryside with his friends. After retirement from the farm in 1960 he moved to Morden and lived in he DeBarr home. He frequented the Morden Seniors Center and of course took in all the baseball and curling going on in the area. Forgot to mention what a great dancer he was, at our family reunions the ladies were lined up for a whirl with him- real smooth!

MARY ISABELLA DUDGEON DENHOLM 1910-2004

Mary completed her earthly journey on July 25, 2004, 18 days short of her 94th birthday.
Mary was the youngest of James and Margaret Dudgeon’s seven children. She was predeceased by two sisters, Bessie Scales of Morden and Margaret Livingston of Dauphin; and four brothers, Andrew of Manitou, Peter of Darlingford, and Alex and Robert of Morden. The Dudgeon family grew up in the Shadeland (Thornhill) district of southern Manitoba. Their parents had emigrated from Scotland in 1886.
Mary married Robert (Bob) Denholm of Oldhanstocks, Scotland. Morden, MB was their home for the next 30 years. They had two daughters, Cathy and Marlene.
Mary was a life member (past president) of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, held offices at Presbytery and Synod levels of the Woman’s Missionary Society, and was active in the Morden Horticultural Society.
When Bob retired, they moved to Winnipeg and served for three years as house parents at the Presbyterian Fellowship House.
In 1964 they travelled to Scotland and lived for a year in Glasgow. On return to Canada, they settled into 22 years of retirement in Makinak, MB. Grandson Robert Sommerville was born during this time. He spent many carefree summers with Nan and Gramps before they moved to Winnipeg in 1980.
After Bob’s death, Mary resided at Riverside Lions Estates where she enjoyed the community life and independant living.
In May of 2000 Mary became a resident at Meadowood Manor where she lived her declining years with great courage and tenacity.
Cathy (John), Marlene and Robert (Dawn) wish to acknowledge the care and support of their extended Denholm and Dudgeon families, friends and neighbours, particularly Liz Morash.
A special thank you is extended to the nursing home staff and aides at Meadowood Manor for their dedicated and compassionate care.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on July 29 at Thomson “In The Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg. Rev. Martha McDowell of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will officiate.
